Default Rock slider opinions...

My rockers are in perfect shape, not one dent or hint of rust anywhere. But, they are thin sheet metal, and I want something that I can use my hi-lift jack on and not worry about it. I've seen all of the rocker replacement threads using box tubing but I don't see the need to cut out the rockers because they are in such good shape. Instead I have decided to just use 3x3 angle welded to the rockers/pinch seam. My question for you is should I use 1/4" or 3/16". I was thinking 1/4 myself. I know it will be a pain to weld something that thick but I am more than capable, I just want it to be able to stand up to the occasional rock, and my jack. Has anyone here used angle? Let me know what you guys think.

since yours isnt rusty when you cut it out it would be an awesome surface to weld to.

i dont think that some angle welded to the pinch seam is gonna be enough to really protect the rockers so i say do some that are like the jcr ones that everyone else has done, i can understand wanting to be different if thats one of your goals but there is a reason so many have sliders like the jcr ones

It's not reall a matter of wanting to be different, I just don't think cutting out a perfectly good rocker and putting box tube in is necessary. My XJ is a daily driver and sees about 99% street. It's not a competetion rock crawler so the most my rockers will encounter are an occasional rock or tree trunk, nothing major. Just looking for a little extra protection and the ability to use the hi-lift on the sides. I would think 3x3x1/4 would be plenty strong enough to support the weight of the jeep on a rock or a jack.
