Cool rear cargo area mod!

I carry a lot of stuff in the back of my xj, and usually the seats are folded down. I started to notice the back of the rear bench seat is thin and cannot hold much weight, so i figured i would make a removable 2nd layer to the floor. What ya think? its a sheet of osb that will be cut down to fit like a glove. Once it fits right i plan to carpet it with indoor out door carpet.

Sound like a lot of extra weight to me. I just pulled the back seat so I wouldn't have to worry about it plus extra room.

Its less than a full sheet of osb, and a full sheet weighs like nothin...I can carry like two by myself. Oh and the truck box wont always be there. I will build mounts to put on the osb so when i got wheelin, I can take my truck box with all my tow straps and stuff.

I might also try to split it so i can fold it up and keep it in there when the seats are up. any other opinions?

Just remember that when osb gets wet it expands and is trash. Might be better off with plywood.

It should work fine. You using 7/16 or 3/4. Being a roofer thought you may think of using 7/16. LOL Just kiddin I'm a roofer too. 3/4 may be the better of the two choices though.

I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out! I also have been trying to think of storage solutions for the back of my XJ.

Sounds like a good idea....i just keep my seats down and have a big plaid sleeping bag covering the whole cargo area. Looks pretty cool but not as functional as some plywood back there and then the sleeping bag covering it.

you could do what i did and make a 'false floor' the first section fits snuggly around the wheelwell and keeps all of my tools and recovery gear all the time and still allows me to use the rear like a floor. the second part fits snuggly as well and goes in when the seat is folded down to create a flat surface just like the normal area would be.

Nice work! I really like what you've got going on here. So do you keep the part that goes over the rear seat out of the vehicle until you need it? Or does it fold back on itself for when the seat is up? I'm trying to see how you have that part, but I really like your idea.
