I have a 91 cherokee and want to mount some tow hooks in the front and i was wondering if there was a way to doit without buying the kit.

 

Well technically you could mount them straight to the frame.

 

Ya but the frame is boxed in. I'm not sure that will work but i will inspect it some more ty.

 

go to the junk yard and find an old XJ that has the hooks and/or the mounts. I think I found mine on a late 80's laredo?? I replaced the hooks themselves with the ones you can find at pepboys, they bolted right up

The problem with mounting the hooks right on the frame, or the bumper is the weight doesent get distributed when you are getting pulled out. You are very likley to remove the hook, and rip a big hole when you do.

The mount will distribute the weight of the pulling and protect your jeep.

BTE, when you are stuck, the last thing you want is to break off your "recovery point"

Very True. That is what I did and I dont know what I was thinking when I wrote the first post.

 

And it would be a seriously stupid idea.

Buy a kit, its like 100$ here in Canada so I'm sure you guys can get it for something ridiculous like 30$.

Best bet is a JY. Probably less than $20 depending on your area.

 

So you're saying that you'd rather have 100$ in your pocket and possibly lose a friend?

Or would you rather pay 100$ and be sure that in a recovery the hook wont rip off and split through your friends head like a watermellon.

 

No frame in a Cherokee, have you ever looked under your jeep, UNI Body !!! But just get some wrangler tow hooks there are holes you can use in the frame to put them in or fab a bar up from one unibody rail to the other..

 

Again, good way to cause some serious damage to man and machine.

 

Not to be "that guy" but if your standing close to a vehicle being "recovered" you deserve a good bonk on the head.

Not saying anything in this thread is good/bad, so thats taken at face value.

 

100% true, but a couple guys in my club have told me about instances where someone was recovering a vehicle without proper recovery points and the hook flew over 50 feet. I've heard about cases like this else where aswell.

 

I wasn't trying to say that its not possible to get hurt if you are far away, but there are such things as safe distances and safe places.

Stand far enough away where, even if hit, you won't be hurt. If you stood far enough away from a gun you could get shot and never bleed one drop.

Or "hide" behind something. Another truck, tree, anything.

My point was, if you are anywhere near the "situation" you are dumb and a Darwin Award should be handed to you.

Just be smart about it. I'm sure we all know that it doesn't matter where you tie that hook into, things CAN and WILL still break. The tow hook may not fail, the mount may not fail, but the strap could.

So if you are recovering, just please be smart!
