Agreed. I use my hitch for so many things... really like the build though.

IMO you should've built a roof rack instead.

I just throw the spare up there and secure it with a mount I made. that way its is out of the way and doesn't block my view. What do you really use a spare tire for except blowouts anyway? nothing. It's just in the way mounted on the back. Plus a rack gives you a lot more options for equipment and lights. (Hi-Lift, shovel, beer cooler...)

If the rack is packed, you have a hitch... Build a homemade off-road trailer!! (my next proj.)

yeah i like roof racks but there so noisey and they grab small tree limb that cause some damage. i wheel in tight wooded area. the rack wont last. i had one on my old bronco it was a pain.

i want to do a trailer down the road for sure. anyone know of anyone who built a mj bed trailer

I've since welded the nut onto the side plate, and a t-handle on the head of the bolt on the opposite side.

my first home brew tire carrier used the hitch to but you have a way better idea there. i like it. i bet if you wanted to tow you could put that idea on a reciever with a ball. i pull a couple wheelers regulairly(?) with my lifted xj. out of o/d it pulls nice.

if people are concerned about not having the use of a hitch i you could(this is what i'll prolly do!) get an hitch receiver and instead of having welded it onto a piece of tube use the receiver in place of the tube and walla! plus the ball would act as your safety stopper. personally i really like the looks of it! it gives the same effectiveness of the swing out with a lot less weight! i will prolly copy you

and i would put it in this bumper- minus the swing out lol

ive always liked the fold down vs. the swing out. always wanted to get the tire to fold out as a table leg and have it turn into a table
