My rear bumper design.
Got bored and drew up a bumper....in MS paint...never again... I figure i'll use either 2x4 or 2x6 rectangle stock and angle irons welded to it for mounting. Gussets on the inside angle of the mounting posts. Obligatory d-ring tabs, and some light tabs with (detachable) guard cages. Suggestions? Unibody tie-in?

So no one thinks a frame tie-in is necessary? I don't really know if the stock mounting points are strong enough.
Definitely gonna have to work that in. Should be simple enough.
I'm not sure if they'd be quite that strong, I'm still unsure of what they'll be made of. Probably just square solid rod.
And to those who complimented my MSpaint skills, thank you It took a lot of copy/pasting/erasing and such to get the 3D perspective. I'm gonna download Google Sketchup so I don't have to go through so much hassle lol.
I would cut 2" trailer hitch in the center.
They could double for a step to reach the basket.

I would say if you dont put the cut out for the trailer hitch you shouldnt need to tie into the "frame" unibody. The factory bumper mounts should have no probleme supporting this bumper. great job on the draw up

For the effort required, put in the tie ins and get nut strips from JCR or somewhere else. Its ridiculously irresponsible to try and make a recovery bumper with just the stock mounting holes.
If its a mall crawler then by all means just use the stock holes.

Supporting the bumper sure, but I sure as sh *t dont want to be around when someone tries to recover that jeep without tie ins.

For recovery you must have it tied in. Otherwise it will just be a flying hunk of steel.
I bought the JCR nut strips and they did not match up the factory holes on a 87 so ya might want to take a look at them prior to blowing the 30 bucks. But if ya are making your own Bumper then fabbing your own nut strips would be simple.
