Thats some cool stuff yall are making. I'm currently working in a machine shop for this summer. I wouldn't call myself a "machinist" but more of an operator lol. I don't do any of the programming but run everything. I do occasionally jump on a manual mill/lathe. Also, we dont do any metal machining. I work for an LED manufacture so everything we make is out of graphite for the process of making the silicone carbide crystals the LEDs are made from.

Haha wish I could. We only manufacture the LED itself. All of the component boards are produced in a building across the street that I no longer have access to. The LED pods that one of the vendors on here sells is of our LEDs

Another machinist here. I work at an engine shop but we don't just build engines. We make all our own parts. Heads, rods, pistons, cams, oil pans, valve covers, rocker arms..... most everything but the block and crank. All the stuff you need to spin a motor 3x the rpm it originally did and put out up to 4000hp.

This thread needs more people.

All of you cnc guys should send me your finished or raw parts so I can grind them flat and to size for you. ;-)

Flatness within 0.0001", parallel within 0.0001" and a finish as low as 1RA. I love working with tight tolerances. I think the tightest that we hold is +- 1 micron.

Let's see you guys do that with your fancy computerized machines! Lol.

I wish I had more time to hop on the lathe and mill at work to fab stuff up.

+ or - 0.000039370078740157" is pretty tight. must be some pretty tight temperature control. and you must have an optical micrometer.

The side that we do all the tight grinding on is climate controlled. The side I work on isn't though. All of our coolant is ran through a chiller though so it helps to keep the parts consistent.

You don't necessarily need an optical micrometer to measure down to 0.000039. Before I got hired there I thought the same thing.

All of our digital mics go down to 0.00005 but we use different instruments to measure below 0.00005".
