Default Machinists Corner

Ok so this is a thread I started on RCcrawler. It's a forum for machinist hobbyist and guys getting into running CNC's hand mills, and lathes to ask other guys for advice in the trade. It's always nice to be able to make your own parts, inquire how parts are made or just get advice on how to turn and thread a specific control arm or mill a bracket.
I have only two years exp. as a cnc machinist and mainly run a mill and hand lathe. So if you have questions or want to introduce yourself and expertise in the trade post it up.
Keep those chips cuttin gents.

I studied to be a machinist through highschool, the shop i was at when i graduated didn't have a full time position for me to have, so i went down the money making road and ended up roofing.
Now ill be moving up to Michigan, hopefully going to college for machining.

I'm 18y.o. and have 3 years manual mill and lathe experience from high school. I competed in a machining competition called skillsUSA my senior year and placed 2nd in New Hampshire then flew to Kansas City, Missouri and placed 24th out of 41 in my competition. G-codes killed me! Didn't learn that in high school but now I'm learning solidworks in college. Year one of my mechanical engineering BA

I had to write g code for a fadal VMC 3016 for the first year of operating it. Took a class at the local CC here in NW Ohio. Its a dinosaur in VMC years but works well enough to hold tenths to some degree. G code is good to know even if you do use mastercam or any other cam software. It helps in understanding the realm of cam programming. Basics are important. I currently program with MasterCam v9 & X6, operating two VMC's and a prototrac when I have run time. I like making stuff, and making stuff better. G54 G20 G17 G90 GO1 GOGOGO

Where in michigan I can get you a part time job in a machine shop.

I kinda agree only because I have broken parts in my spindle and have had to manually make them to get my machine back up so manual is just as important as cnc.

I'm a production machinist.

I run, setup, repair and trouble shoot Hydromats
Run Acme's and Star CNC lathe

And know my way around Lathe, Mills, and surface grinds...

SkillsUSA did that in highschool not for CNC though all manual. And you're takin the same route i am for mechanical engineering.
