these such an awesome and easy idea that I decided I wanted to do these today.
me and my dad knocked them out in about 20min

they probably arent as strong as yours since I placed them on the inside because it was easier that way
but still a huge upgrade over stock
and for the low low price of FREE these will work just fine

Oh ya she was. Look at those welds! Haha I wish I had a gas bottle. Flux core is ugly

 

Why on earth would you want to stick weld something like this? Mig is the way to go!

 

How come you guys dont brace the sides of the brackets? Make it tons stronger for rock bashing?

 

MIG machines are easy to use, and make a pretty weld. At the same time SMAW machines have been around over 100 yrs, and in capable hands can make just as pretty of a weld. Also it is easier to weld thicker materials with it.


Personally I own 3 mig machines and 2 SMAW machines.. and I use them about equally.

LCA skids are an awesome idea. I have always made my own out of 3"x.25 flat stock. As long as you attatch both sides, and to the axle it is very effective.

 

True mig is great for such a project and everything really but a quality mug machine and gas can get expensive. I can get a 220V stick welder that's good enough for everything on my jeep, for super cheap. and I know how to use it in most positions.

 

This can happen from running Poly Bushings too.

But mig is the way to go for nice clean welds.and no clean up afterwards! Vs. chipping slag, no slag inclusions weakening the weld area. I am very familiar with smaw. But i would use mig all the way and if you were worried about pen.. Bevel the edges a little bit! Just MO. Oh yeah great job! Looks good keep up the welding.

 

Did you put a LCA in place to make sure you weren't welding the plate in where it interferes with it? Looks like it's pretty close.
