I'm looking into buying one of those cold air intake systems at autozone and I figure they're no good unless you are actually sucking in cold air and not air from your engine bay so now I'm looking into making a custom ram air system to let cold air in.... Has anyone made one? If so can you tell me what you did so I can get a general idea of what to build? I'm open to any ideas/suggestions however. I'm also trying to figure out where I'd put it, since there's almost no room in between the radiator and the grille.
Thanks in advance!

If you take out the factory airbox theres actually alot of space to cut with, you could cut out the bottom of were your old air box is and put the top of the old air box on the bottom and get a filter to put on the inside of the tube and there you have it, ram air....just from the bottom of the car lol just a thought.

Not a good idea once you hit a puddle.
Ram air is something that is going to be really hard to make work properly. The best thing that you can do to improve air flow is to get a bored throttle body or throttle body spacer. This will give you the most bang for you buck on a 4.0.

I like the concept of cutting out from the bottom, but it's just too wet in michigan to have that work. If i lived in arizona or someplace where it never rains, that would do the trick. I like to drive through mud puddles on dirt roads at 35+ sometimes (yeah its a bad idea but it makes the jeep look cool afterward!
) I might go with the throttle body spacer option. I was talking to my dad about getting a snorkel possibly and he was saying they are expensive as hell and making one yourself isn't a great idea so i might just abandon the whole getting cold air in idea. it seems too hard to do when you've got an xj that is no stranger to water lol

I made this for my last truck, and will to the same for my XJ at a later date.
It is made of fiberglass - including the ram air scoop (which I made a mold from an original Safari Snorkel.
If you want a detailed 'novel' as to how I made it PM me.

Spacers dont do much from what i understand. What you really want is a bored throttle body.
But if you do want a ram air, get a hood scoop from online, attach it to the hood, cut out the hood under the hood, and make some kind air pan/pipe system and takes it to the intake. And heat wrap the crap out of it...just an idea

just a thought, i saw a guy on another forum run his filter up inside the cab so water wouldnt get to it and the air is cold inside the cab,
heck maybe that way if you want more power turn the vent towards the filter and turn the ac on

Neat little unit that you can open and close depending on your needs. I'm going to place conical filter up by the brake res. and mount this above it for ram air. Or close when it rains.
That will free up the room for 2nd battery.
