Technically you could easily squeeze a couple thousands out of a mic also,I second dial calipers (don't ever have to worry about batteries). I use my 0-6" mitutoyo calipers for reference only, and had those bad boys for about 8+ years now. Anybody remember how too read verniers? 
I had to refresh my memory last week.
