Here's the front where I had left off. This is where I was thinking of a front skid/winch mount setup by cutting off the lower lip of the c channel and making it a bolt on deal. That way would end up something similiar to yours, keeping a low cog and hidden at the same time.If I cut the upper lip I would have to cut the front grill also to make it fit and it will block the air flow a bit also. Decisions, decisions....hidden winch bumper/steering box brace build-dscf4139.jpg

Could you explain this a little further? I built a bumper very similar to yours, and now I'm adding a vr8000 to it, I'm not entirely sure how to clock it. And what is a cut out motor?

I unbolted the motor from the winch and rotated it about 90*.

and the cut out motor is just a motor used for electronic exhaust cut-outs. I will make a rig for it to electronicly switch the winch from spool to open

Thanks, I figured that's all you did with the motor. And the cut-out idea seems interesting, I will have to research it more.

i would love to build my own just like this.

And did you ever figure out how to get the cut-out motor to work?

nice bumper why didnt you just bolt the winch to the face of the bumper it would be way stronger as there wouldnt be a side load on the winch it would be pulling beneath itself and you wouldnt have that shelf for water and mud to sit in...just my thoughts

No. Hadnt had a reason to yet. Reaching behind the bumper doesn't bother me....yet

If you remember, the base this bumper was built off is a 2x4. Which is not wide enough for the mounting holes on the winch.

I don't think strength will ever be an issue on this design. Everything is so well braced and gusseted it's not going anywhere . Plus, that big piece of braced 1/4 plate steel it's mounted on helps stop the torsional stress of the unibody frame rails better than the face mounted winch bumpers like you are talking about, imo.
