I have been grinding some heavy rust, some weakspots and holes. Figured I'd use rust converter on some of the oxidized weaker spots, primer, rivet some sheetmetal over the top in the trunk area then some rhino liner.

Anybody know of the liner peeling up from the heat in the tranny area? Any other experiences?

just prep the metal correctly before you spray your primer on and you shouldnt have any issues.. shoudnt get hot enough to peel it if prepped correctly

 

So I should prime the metal before I apply bed-liner?

 

Depends on the product, some bed liners are made to go directly on bare metal surfaces. Some recommend priming before application, just follow the instructions on the can.

 

I used duplicolor bed liner roll on in mine, the rear cargo area holds up great, the front passenger area tends to flake off alot in big chunks ive noticed, I thinks its because of the repetative high heat and cooling. it tends to be the worst above the exhaust

 

I was looking at herculiner, i'm not a big fan of dupli products. i also remember hearing of someone using the stuff they use on shop floors, the oil resistant, non-slip like at autoshops and such. Don't know the brand, have to do some research. I know you can get it in different colors and textures which would be cool, just don't know how it will hold up to heat.

 

well i recommend herculiner.

I did mine over a month ago, and its still perfect over all hot spots. no chipping, flaking or peeling.

I did however notice a tiny tiny spot that is sort of peeling up on the drivers side front pan. but the reason for that is because I had used primer on it and i dont think the herculiner likes that stuff (rustoleum heavy rust primer). reason i suspect this is because xylene (a major chemical part of the herculiner) dissolves primers like that.

long story short, put it on bare metal not primed metal (in my experience). I prepped by going over eveything with a wire wheel on a grinder, then 120 grit sandpaper, then the supplied scoring pad.

i think i actually might do the undercarriage with it too.

 

Herc it!! It's the best stuff you can have for that type of project.

 

I herculined mine in the winterish time around 5 months ago and no peeling flaking or anything. it holds up really well. Ive already seen 100 degree weeks here in GA so heat aint a problem. I primed with acetone first like the can said for herculiner. works great.

 

I used herculiner over 4 years ago and it has held up perfectly. I highly recommend.

 

Looks like you guys talked me into the herculiner, tho I still want to look into the flooring stuff. Planning on doing the bottom third of my exterior as well, so colored would look great. maybe sort of a camo. Which would look great on the inside... So no primer, what about rust-stop? Same deal I assume?

From what I've gathered duraback is pretty much the same as herculiner, except it comes in more colors. I'm in the prep stage right now of lining my interior and this is what I'm gonna use http://durabakcompany.com

 

Slowly coming along. Picture isn't the best, but you can see how the cab part is ground down to the steel. I'm trying to get ready for the liner this weekend, but work is busy so we'll see.
