Does anybody have pics of rear fender trimming on a 90 xj. Trying to fit 35's next and it will rub without trimming them.

remove the fender
use an angle grinder to trim around the fender-well (NOT cutting the pinch welds.. just below them)
then cut vertical notches in between each of the pinch welds (just up to where the inside fender well meets the body panel)
then take a rubber mini-sledge and pound the "tabs" in under the fender.. pound them flat
some guys tack weld the tabs, I didnt think it necessary
then use the spray rust-reformer/primer/spray on under coating (in that order.. allowing time to dry in between.. about 30 minutes per each light coat) PS~ 2 thin coats cover better than one thick..

ive done 1/2' cuts all the way around the rear fenders and bent them up into the wheel well on each sides so its trimmed as much as it can be as of rite now. im just wondering if i can cut it out anymore as far as cutting into the wheel well and resealing it. i have 33's rite now and it flex's fully into the wheel well but i wanna get 35's next and im wondering if i can fab it to fit 35's. im gonna do 1' spaces front and rear but the rear will rub.

I found a post on some forum and now I can't find it, I'm tubbing out my fenders this weekend. In the post, the first thing he did was "bob" the rear quarter panel, then the guy cut the outer wheel well at the pinch seam (INSIDE the wheel well, the one over your tire, not next to it)and then cut the outer fender, level to the cut pinch seam. Then he welded in a piece of 12ga sheet metal from the cut pinch seem to the outer fender.

Before he welded the 12ga. in, he also cut the back half of the inside well well out(the piece you see from the cargo area) from the center(looking at the side of the jeep) back. He then cut the floor out behind the cut-out wheel well, matching the profile, and welded in the inside wheel well piece back in. That left him with a 3" gap on the inside wheel well, so it got filled with another peice of 12ga.

When you looked at the Jeep, the wheel well went straight in. It looked really good, stout as hell and I think he was running 37's, but went with 35's on a 4.5" lift. Like I said I'm doing it this weekend and I'll take pictures and probably start a build thread

Like this? The bottom pick is on 33" with 3" springs and longer shackle. Should be about 4 1/2" of lift.

thanks Lightfoot.. that bottom pic looks clean and i would love to do that. but do u have pics showing progress of wut they're cutting and how far they cut into the wheelwell? or a link to a site that shows it?

may be SLIGHTLY different from the older gen but this is pretty much my deal. Took the fender flare off, cut off the small lip on the bottom of the sheetmetal, then cut the lines shown below (making sure to avoid hitting the pinch welds), then hammered the tabs back intot he well.

Its my jeep and I do have more pics. I just cut the inner fender well out at the seem above the tire. I also made my wheel wells 3" longer so I can move the axle back a little. I then used 12ga to make new flat openings.

Yeah, I haven't started a build thread yet. I'm almost done, but I ran out of gas for the MIG, so I'll have to finish it tommorow. I decided to stretch my wells back 4" instead of 3" and I like it, theres way more clearance than a cut and fold job and I have 4" clearance AROUND my 31's on a 3" lift and a bunch more up-travel. The driverside did get a little interesting around the gas tank tunnel, because its 3 11/16" from the back of the wheel well. Anyway I took pictures every step of the way, so I might just put together a write-up. I took me about 8-9 hours per side(the passenger side was a learning curve and the driverside has that gas tank tunnel). I was also using a plasma cutter too, so it'll take longer with cutoff wheels

If your welder can run it, try .023 or .030 wire, I'm running .035, and its almost to big to be welding these body panels. If your using 12ga. take your time and get it as close to where you want it before it goes in, its stubborn stuff. The cut list for the 12ga. for me was 2 at 4x15", and 2 at 7x60" that gave me about a 2" flare I can trim down later and a little sticking down on the front and back of the well. Good luck tommorow!

Right now I'm running 31's on a 3" block lift(yeah I know, I didn't buy it) and a stock d35, which is gonna be a ford 8.8. Heres a before picture when I was laying out my cuts and prepping for welds



"Cut and fold??...we don't need no stinking cut and fold!"



Got the new well in, just got to trimm it and throw some bed liner at it



All done. I'm gonna start a new thread with lots more pics with better descriptions and some tips I figured out along the way.



Gonna need bigger mud flaps!

When you cut the fenders the first time were you able to re-use the flares? Also how'd you like the sport kings? I've got a set of those in my yard and want to put em on my xj (FREE!)
