thanks everyone, I'm stoked with how well it's coming together. of course, I'll probably need to upgrade my lift by the time it's done. lol..
as for the window vents.. I finished up a jig for the rears today, so I'll be able to crank them out for anyone interested in them. just gotta talk to admin before I start selling stuff here. don't wanna be stepping on any toes or anything. after my week off (starting today, YAY) I'll get to work on doing up a jig for the front doors as well. and after that, gotta find a ginuea pig for a 2 door.

also, a minor update.. more of an explanation of certain areas I guess?
so first up, the forward cubby.. my kids and I enjoy target shooting up in the mountains, so I wanted to make a spot for them in the build. I hate just tossing a rifle bag in the back, because I don't want it exposed to prying eyes if we stop and have lunch somewhere. I think this solves that dilemma just fine.

next up, ammo storage.. didn't want to devote an entire drawer for it, so I split it up

and then..

22lr for my kids' s&w mp15-22, 9mm for my xd9 (edc), .223 for my s&w mp15 sport, and some 12g for my norinco 982 (remington 870 clone) .. eventually I'll build removable trays for each, but I'm getting ready to leave for a camping trip tomorrow so I just tossed some in there loose for now.
almost sad she won't be ready for sleeping in this trip, but this will just give me more motivation right? LOL

love the addition and incorporation of the forearms, it would also be cool to add a removable drawer or "trap door" type idea over the ammo to store some other smaller stuff and keep that ammunition safe and concealed!

I've got an 89 two door
I think it would be tough on the 97+ two doors because they aren't square (mine are), but I'm sure it would work if you took the time to do it.
Im not big into gun shooting, I have before just never made it a hobby of mine. I personally would be uncomfortable sleeping on live ammo like that, though I'm sure it will be fine.
My biggest concern would be the rounds jostling around. Maybe some foam on top to keep em from jostling around? Does the lid for the ammo keep each area contained or are they open to mixing around on a rough trail?
What kind of tools did you have to use to make this thing?

each area is separated with the lid on.. and when I do the insert trays, I plan on having each one lined with carpet and such to help keep rattles to a minimum. it's an xj, it rattles enough on it's own as-is. lol
as for tools; the whole thing was done with a table saw, jig saw, and a hole saw for the drawer pulls. a dado blade would have been nice for the drawers, but I made do without.

I love the the firearm and ammo storage! I may have to build one of these now. Are you going to line your drawer trays with something like plastidip. I would hate to put a muddy wet strap back in over my ammo.

eventually the cabinet will be strictly camping related gear tho, as toolbags and recovery gear will eventually end up in a lockbox on the roofrack. can't always get in the back hatch when you're stuck. the roof is pretty much always accessible.
