new self-close drawer slides, full extension of course..
upper section and dividers in..
so many slides!!! lol
top mounted down, cleats along the sides to support the hinged wing pieces..
and mounted in the jeep!
next comes some trimming out, then drawers. those are going to be a bit trickier this time around.

Are you still planning on using the expanded metal for sleeping? I think with the box being taller in the back, you are really limiting your space for sleeping. Your idea for making a roof tent would be really great to look into. The other thing you could do is build an expedition trailer, but you would still need a roof tent.

So I was looking up an idea of "how to make your own roof top tent" and found this link on Pirate - http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/gener...-top-tent.html
Its a great idea and great start, but I would make mine out of aluminum to minimize on weight.

i've still got the jigs, so yeah
after making a few camping trips with the old setup, i made myself a list of things i wanted to change. i made a few little tweaks here and there, but in the end decided i'd be better off starting over from scratch.
i've always considered sleeping in the jeep more of a last ditch kinda thing.. like if the weather was really bad, or if i needed to crash on a long drive, etc. even with the box being a bit taller, i've still got enough room to crawl up there and zonk out if need be.
but funny you should mention a trailer.. i'm actually going to be building one there's a company local to me that fabs up trailers, and i've been talking to them about building me a 4x8 frame with a 3500lb axle and 5x4.5 hubs. once i have the frame made, i'll be building an offroad teardrop on top of it. i've spent the past 6 months doing a crapload of research and drawing up the plans to make it happen. once completed, it should be tough enough to drag along pretty much anywhere.
the main problem with having a tent on top of the jeep is the fact that the campsite has to go with you wherever you go. if i want to camp out at moab, for example, i'd have to pack everything up in order to hit the trails. with a seperate trailer, this becomes a non-issue. drop the tongue jack and you're free to take off, and have a bed ready for you to come back to.

Trailers are the way to go. Only problem for me is that I already have a flat bed trailer on the side of the house for my sand rail. My eyes are really big with all the projects I want to do, I am running out of space.

more work today..
got some wings made up to close off the side cubbies. wasn't a fan of how they were open on the last build. also got the big drawer built. used 3/8 ply as the base for this one, as it needs to carry a bit of weight.
next couple drawers are pretty standard
last drawer is a bit more complicated. i've been using a portable stove for camping, but didn't have a convenient place to use it. debated buying a small aluminum table from walmart, but that would just be one more piece of equipment to have to pack up. dug around the expo forums for a bit and saw something i really liked. first, a mount for the stove itself..
then a way for fresh air to get pulled up thru it, as well as a small counter addition..
then built drawer for the drawer to sit in..
step 1.. stove and counter
step 2.. storage under burner for plates and utensils, taller stuff fits under the counter at the back of the drawer
and that's it for the day
