Well, after a short weekend out on the trails and running my winch and lights... etc i decided a high idle trigger would be a good little mod for the trails.

I've researched and have seen a few mods where you tap into an open circuit and trick the computer with a power switch and it makes the engine run at a higher RPM... Well i want to select the RPM my truck sits at when i'm winching or shining light on someone's truck while they're working on it.

I've seen this done on some other jeeps so i figured i would just wing it...

When i did my HO motor/harness swap i also hooked up the cruise control.. but found out today that it doesn't work so it's getting removed soon!


Now on to the parts...
on the left, a simple bike derailleur friction shifter... key for making this work ($10 from local bike shop)
on the right, a pack of new bike cables, came with 2 derailleur and 2 brake cables ($5)


Next is a crappy phone pic of the pieces i used to make a cable stay at the bracket for the throttle cable(s)
2 washers, a bushing sleeve, an e-clip, and a cable crimp (all about $2.50)

first i test fit the cable shifter.. was a little large so i took some sheet metal and made a little spacer that wraps around the shifter... fits nice and tight now


then made a small slit next to the shift "skirt" and ran the cable's casing into the engine bay


took the smaller washer and welding it to one end of the bushing sleeve


then test fit the cable's "cradle" and marked for where the e-clip will fit


then made a small slit around the bushing sleeve to custom fit the e-clip around it

I then cut the washer for some space saving along side the throttle cable setup

then ran the cable into the engine bay


crimped a loop in the cable, making sure there is some slack so it doesn't restrict the throttle from going to "zero throttle"

LOOKS FANTASTIC! Going to be surely doing this. Quick question, when you ran the cable over the trans, how did you get it into the engine bay? Keep pushing and it popped out or what?

i used a piece of vacuum line to help pinch the cable loop around the throttle plate's hoop.. there are 2 zip-ties there to squeeze the vacuum line against it and keep it from falling off...

I also zip tied the cable's casing to the throttle cable's casing to keep it from moving back/around when i'm using the high idle "throttle"


And that's it for the setup so that's about $17.50 for all the parts and pieces...

I had drilled a hole in the firewall (small hole) that was for wires that i ran into the cab for my switch box. The hole still had some room left in it so the cable fit through just fine... (the hole was drilled just below and to the side of the blower motor...

LOL yup "kinda" have cruise control now hahahaha...

sweet. i like it. i've seen this done before with a brake lever though. it was on a manual and they used it for hill climbs if they had to stop and start over.

wow thats a good idea... i dont need one yet but once i get a winch i think ill be doing this. how well does it work? notice a difference while winching?

i just set it up yesterday afternoon and i don't really go out to the trails or mudding etc until the weekend(s) so the next time i have it out and i use it i'll let you guys know... i have tested it in my driveway and it works perfect... I can idle my jeep at any rpm and it just sits there... (lol even red-line!)

Interesting approach. I did the high idle switch that taps into the factory high idle wire with a switch to a ground-idles a little over 1k rpms. Works great for my 6 130w kc lights, your idea is probably better for a winch though.

Could the cruise control be rewired some how, I'm no electronic expert, just a thought.

a freinds tj had the same device fitted, it makes a hell of a difrence when you are driving over bumpy stuff and need to keep the revs at a constant as well

You should submit this to the writeups. Looks like a great idea for running a winch. Makes me want to do this and a dual battery setup now.

i have no idea... maybe... Me doing this H.I.T. (high idle trigger for future reference) wasn't a factor of my cruise control not working... it was for when i'm winching.. When i start using my winch, you can see the lights dim out... obviously because of power use BUT if you have a little more RPM then they don't dim out at all cuz the Alt. is charging more... Hence the selection of high idle. It was just convenient that my C.C. wasn't working and is being removed now.

i saw that setup... but i already have/will have roughly 6-9 switches to choose from in the cab when i get all my goodies setup and wired in, that's lights, OBA, cooling fan and etc.. so i wanted something a little more select-able and obvious.... you can forget about a switch being on but not so much a bike cable shifter sitting below your shift handle
