COS's Rear Bumper Progress:
Made some progress on the rear bumper build this weekend. I made the brackets to slide into the unirail, and opened the rear of the unirail for access.
I used the same tubing for the brackets that I used to make the bumpers.
No worries, the grade 5 hardware was just for mock up purposes. I'll installing grade 8 when it goes on for real.
Once I get the brackets finished, there will be a total of 20 bolts holding it in place, that should be plenty!! LOL!!
A shot of the inside of the bumper. I want the best departure angle possible, so the reciever hitch is tucked in to nearly flush with the outer surface of the bumper.
Bumper clamped in place to check the depth in which it will sit. It is right where I wanted it to be. Now I have to finish the brackets, so I can tack it together.
This shot shows how flush the bumper fits.
I'm hoping to have this done in a couple more visits to the shop, so far it's coming along well.

I like the mounts. What was the original size and thickness for the tubing that you put in the frame rails? Did you use 1/2" bolts also? Looks good. Heck, with that many bolts, grade 5 would be fine.

Yep, the same as I put into the front one. The D-rings will be the next phase of the build. I'm also building a D-ring reciever hitch insert, I guess that will be plenty of recovery points!! LOL!!!

looks good, its like an off road rollpan (mini truckers will know) cause itsits so flush, is it going to rap around the sides at all?

Very nice COS! Rewster is right, it really makes me think of a rollpan for a street truck, except yours is quite possibly the toughest rollpan in all creation. I especially like the recessed, flush mounted hitch receiver. I wish I could find something similar to this that someone was selling, it's a very ideal design..

That thing looks almost exatly like what I had planned for mine. Now you gave me a great idea for how to tie into the frame rail. I didn't know what I was going to do. My xj only came with the nut strip on the passenger side for mounting the heat sheild for the gas tank/exhaust. The dealer wanted $30 for the drivers side one, but F that. Thanks for doing all of the thinking for me COS!
