Hubby is making me a custom roof rack, I really like the sides, he perforated them with his 55ton metal working machine. The perforation is for design as well as function, they hold straps.

Thanks Gary, I'm pretty excited about it. I think he said it weighs around 30 or so pounds.

Lite is the way to go, you can achieve strength through clever design as opposed to bulky materials, straping alot of weight to the roof of roll over prone vehicles makes no sense!

Looks great X2 on the miters. What materials did he use? How much does he think it will hold? Attaching to stock points or gutter?

Made out of 1" 16 gauge square tubing. The cross member to hold the spare tire is 14 gauge to handle the weight of the tire. It will support around 300 pounds, if you had to carry that much. It was made to attach to the original roof rack mounting points

I asked about the miters. Hubby said there are no miters by design because he is machining from billet aluminum cap inserts that have yellow LED market lights imbedded in them in the front and red in the rear caps, he is machining in his Bridgeport Mill.

STILL not finished, have more lights to add and need to make a top plate for the spare tire but here is a picture of it mounted on the roof.
