best steel?
im wanting to make a pipe winch bumper. i was just wondering what gauge/diameter would be best for this. and a very rough estimate of what it might cost. i know it depends on a lot of different things im just looking for a ballpark amount. thanks in advance guys. (sorry if this doesn't belong here)

Look for it to say ".090 wall thickness", or ".125" wall thickness". You don't want anything less than 10 guage, even that is pretty thin.
As far as cost, if you have the welder, grinder, and other tools it could be anywhere from $50-$150+ in materials. It all depends on how involved you get, and the price of steel in your area.
Here is a list of everything I would use for a tube front bumper. I have never made a tube bumper though. PM FrankZ about it, he makes/ has made plenty of really good tube bumpers.
2 sticks (24' each) 2"x.125"wall tube (should have some left over for other stuff)
2' 1"x2" bar stock for the shackle tabs (you will have extra for the rear this way)
4'x7"x.25" flat stock for the frame tie ins (you might have some left over)
Go onto metaldepot.com and price out what I listed to get a general idea of cost.

I understand that DOM is stronger and is a must for rollcages but why not use seamed tubing for a bumper as long as you build it right and support it, it will be as strong and you could go with .120 wall and still save money. Just wondering.
