Another rocker replacement.
Going wheeling saturday with some fellows. Really didn't want to constantly worry about caving my tin foil rockers in. Now mine are very solid(as in no rust) But still tin foil if you know what I mean.
Did not want to lose any clearance from the bolt on sliders. And truthfully did not want the expenses. So today with the help from my friend we decided to replace the current rockers with 3/16 steel 3inx5in tubing.
Really did not want huge steps sticking out so thats why we went with the 5 in.
Took only about 1 hour to cut the existing rockers out.
First we ground off the spot welds at the lower seam.

Next we marked out the area to be cut and used a cut off wheel to get started then an air hammer to finish the cutting.

We cut the rocker out right below the top plate. Then used the air hammer again to pop the lower spot welds lose.

So far its been a snap. Tomorrow we will hopefully finish the rocker upgrade.

Picked up my new rocker boxes. Wow! these things may be a bit more than I bargained for. But I got them now, no turning back.

My friend only had a couple hrs of free time today. But that was enough to rough them in so at least I would have protection this weekend.
Punched about 100 holes each side for the spot welds. Then welded the seam after the spot welds.

Now of course we had to put them to the test

Next week he will but some nice angles in to box them. Paint and finish sealing them.
Pretty happy with them. Don't loose any clearance and definitely beefy!
OH, lol. Justin was so confident on the sturdiness that he shoved his little finger in between the door and the rocker box. He said jack away! Did not even move 1mm! He said it did not move at all. For added protection this should work fine.

Thanks guys. It will look much better once we finish it.
I went with 3/16" tubing. 3x5". The 3x5 matches perfectly to the bottom of the lower seam. And for structural purposes I wanted an exact fit.

I wanted the extra ground clearance, I did the 2X6 on the flat.
The inner strip goes from the floor down to the pinch weld (about 1")
I took that out too.

Pretty sweet, looks beefy. I'm doing mine out of 2x6 tomorrow! Metals waiting in the garage! Can't wait. I'm mounting mine higher than stock location and trimming 1.75" off the doors. Look for my fab thread soon!
Just an update. Got them tapered and painted. The 3x5" steel tubing works awesome. And is super durable in the rocks without being tied into the frame..
I have mashed them pretty hard with all the weight of the jeep, and they don't budge, the doors open great. I love being able to pivot the jeep using the rock sliders!
