84-96 oem gas tank skid to work with 97+

has anyone modded a 84-96 gas tank skid to work on a 97+ xj? i can get one for 10 bucks and was wondering its possible to do, i cant weld so anything to do with that is out. but i think i read something were someone just cut slits in it or something? has anyone done this? pics would be great too if you have done so

ok well i just wanted to make sure it was possible, before i drive all that way to pic it up, was it something easy to do or kinda hard? like i said i cant weld so thats out, but i dont mind if i have to cut it up a little to make it fit
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. I didn't get home until after dark and my wife has the camera in her car....which of course means she's not home when I need it. Anyway, all I did cut the skid all the way across right where it starts to curve upward at the rear. This means the vary back of your gas tank is exposed, but I figure with a hitch there, the chances of it taking a really bad hit are slim.
