1990 xj rear bumper build
Started working on my back bumper yesterday. Got one mounting bracket done. We used 1/4" plates for the base and 2" conduit for the rest of the bracket. The rest of the bumper will be 1/16". More progress and pictures to come.

I'm not arguing, but what would be the down side of Using the conduit? I've seen square tube used before, is it just structure?

well for starters conduit? is a light walled pipe (wearker than std sch40 pipe and much weaker than DOM). also conduit is a softer matal and bends much easier. but in defence of gobokeneebly it should work just fine as long as its main purpose isnt a recovery bumper, at that doint the oe mounting pionts are also a concern.

dosent matter how light the bumper is, its bolted to light tin. Its going to eb purely show, and wont function for recovery in any real recovery situations.
go inside the uniframe rails, see my link for details, in my sig.

Better than Stock
Good start. This is still way better than the stock bumper. If your hitch is tied into the unibody channel with solid bolts, you could use it for light recovery.
My stock bumper was mangled by the PO and I needed something to protect the body before I fixed and painted it.
Bumper v2.0 used the stock brackets, two pieces of 2.5" square tubing 1/8" wall stacked and tied into the body mounted hitch. I towed a 3000 lb sailboat on multiple occasions and a few cars including a 72 Chevelle on a decked double axle trailer without incedent. The biggest problem was the low hanging hitch getting hung up while wheeling. Bumper v2.0 will be for sale soon.
Bumper v3.0 solved the low hanging issue, mounts at the stock bumper mount points and inside the body rails with four 12mm bolts and one 16mm eyebolt per side, and has extra receiver mounts for "accessories".

i say the rigid isnt nearly as bad as some might think. although a better choice would be some black iron pipe i think might be a close call. the real down side will be is that if its only mounted to the stock bumper mounts. you could get away with using your material if you add more mounting point as stated already. go for it.
