Default xj in a tj

Think this is the right spot. But my brother in law has an 05 tj with a 6spd. 3 and 4 went out and he was quoted $3000 for a new one. Been doing research and I know the ax15 will fit the 4.0 from 97-04. Was seeing if anybody would know if it would fit the 05. Any help would be great.

from my knowledge, everything from 2001-newer used the NV3550 and not the AX-15

Ya around 2000-2001+ was NV3550..but a ax-15 is a direct swap if its externaly slaved!
Everyone seems to say the NV3550 is "stronger" but not by much...So I'll give you first hand experience. The ax-15 in our 96 XJ takes a beating since its been built..33's and 3.07s, jeepspeed style stuff, letting a chick drive it
Never skipped a beat! Had the gears grinded beyond belief, fluids never changed, nor checked!
Got a new NV3550 cause we went 2wd for a jeepspeed style rig..new as in never used, 0 miles. $1300 bucks from the dealer new...she grinds and pops out of third now with maybe 8k on it..If we get on it in 3rd for to long it'll spit the gear right out & likes to grind going into it 50% of the time...and our 3rds fairly long...33's & 307's
It does feel lighter than the Ax-15 shifting, but the Ax-15 felt smoother..if you can understand that. The Nv3550 is notchier but feels lighter..Ax-15 feels heavy but would litteraly glide into gear!

Idk what they changed from trans to trans, but we are waiting for a decent Ax-15 to pop up and we'll gladly take that and sell the NV3550.

I havehad bothtransmissions listed, and the 6 speed that is in the 05 and ups. nv3550 was offered in 200 and 2001 tjs. the 6 speed is the same one in the jks now that jeep has had since05. nv3550 is alot stronger and is pretty loud. its always loud. it was inalot of dodge 1500s prior to the 6 speed craze. heavy trucks with v8s were fine so our jeeps and nv3550 is agreat choice

Yeah I know the transmission options....most anyway. But here in Idaho If a wrangler hits the junkyard parts are already gone. But there are many Cherokees so thought why not get the tranny out of one but can't find anywhere that says a ax-15 will work for an 05 but it's a very early 05.
