Default Where to put a CJ7 Tech question

Forgive me Mods if this gets moved.

I am hoping someone might have been involved in a CJ7 build at one time that could given me some tech for bouncy..my cj7 nightmare.

Present problem. Front Driveshaft getting from t-case to front diff.
Facts: (Research is KEY...ALL research is better) I decided to install a MOPAR 360 motor rather than a 350 chevy or 360/401 amc into my CJ7. Engine...Moper 360 non-magnum motor. Every last possible upgrade put on it except a roller cam. Pushing 400hp or more. Already torn two heavy driveshafts in half and ripped apart yokes in the rear axle and t-case. Yep its got some power. Cost...To much to even think about changing.

I went with a 727 transmission given a 727amc was used in the J10 trucks. 727 also have the 4qt deep pan from B&M. This doesn't make the problem worse...doesn't help either. Tranny already built to the hilt to handle the power from the motor..Cost $800

I went with the D300 t-case because it could bolt to the 727 and was a very strong t-case. D300 built to the hilt with all JB conversions parts. 32 spline this...stronger that etc. Cost $1150

Given the D300 is a rather small case, it will NOT make it past the tranny on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Hypothysis: Flip D300 with D300 flip kit. Install D44HP drivers drop and shoot the driveshaft down the drivers side of the vehicle. WONT WORK. Even looking to outboard the springs, there just isn't enough room to fit a 2" driveshaft down past the tranny and leave room for flex. It will HIT the tranny.

Theorys: change the tranny to ??? keeping the mopar LA 360 (non-magnum motor) Finding a tranny to bolt up is a PITA and adapters are running in the $500 range.

Other option..Change t-case to a possible NP-208 but at what disadvantage. Can it hold the power and climbing. Other options that would bolt up for drivers drop axle...unknown.

I am looking for advise on what people KNOW will work together. I want to keep as much as possible. Just didn't count on all these problems with driveshaft alignment.

CJ7 10inches of lift running Full detroits front and rear. 38" super swampers.

Any and all info would be of great help. As I have had this at a shop for a month now and the guy just doesn't know how to fix it to make it work...WE are exploring all options. So hopefully there are a few CJ guys out there that could help out.

Thanks. And Mods if this has a home, please move it there. I figure after a week, this thread will be on the back pages.

What about an Atlas II transfercase. It seems small but you never say exactly how much room you need for a driveshaft with your particular flex.
Second option is to change to a stick. Tremec trannys are very stout and can be adapted to fit a Mopar bell housing giving you even more clearance.
BTW this should be in OV thread section IMO.

atlas 2 t case is built on the model of the d 300 t case. d300 is a great t case, i'd say you gotta ditch that trans if you're out of ideas.

great trans that should bolt right up to the 360= nv4500 used in dodge 2500 and 3500 trucks. (stick shift)

Clock the Tcase straight down... run Rockwells.

Good luck... sounds like one hell of a CJ...

Wish I had a CJ7 to build..

To answer a few things mentioned. The shop and I are looking into Atlas and Stak t-cases.

I don't know how much room we have to work with as I am not taking the measurements. I know that it comes very close to the drivers side back corner of the transmission. With that info, any major flex could put the shaft into the side of the pan.

This morning, they are exploring the idea of moving the engine/trans/t-case over closer to the passenger side to make more room.

Clocking ring has already been installed/tried/failed. If you clock up or down from level, it just moves the yoke closer to the tranny.

As for the tranny options mentioned for stick shift. I am an automatic guy. Exploring turbo 350/400/700r4 or powerglide. Just getting it to bolt up is the issue.

Hopefully I will know more today. Last night was rather depressing seeing the CJ in pieces and trying figure out the impossible.

i have a 500hp SBC in mine with a sm465 tranny outta a 86 1ton dually and a d300 transfer case when i did the swap everything worked great! it all fit right in i had to do some modifyin to the trans cross member and the floor pan where the shifter stickes thru becides taht it all fit! i have also done a 350 chevy motor with a turbo 350 and a d300 and that was alomost a bolt in swap except for welding motor mounts it fit like a charm! my suggestion would be junk 727 and use it as a paper weight(im not a big fan of them) if ur stuck on a auto use a turbo 350/400 or a power glide as u suggested. advance adapeters will have what you need. and there shouldnt be to much of a problem. if i can make a 12 valve cummins a 727 trans a np205 tcase go into a cj u can get that mopar to fit! sounds like u have a nice cj post pics when u work the bugs out! and dont forget u gotta stuff an exhaust system under there somewhere! let me know how it goes and pm me if u have any questions!

JP Mag had the same prob with a 727 behind a HEMI and running a D300. They clocked it to like 15* and had Tom Woods build a small Dia. DOM front drive shaft..

Way back when, when I worked at a trans shop, I ran across an odd piece of equipment... A Jeep/AMC TH400 4X4 trans case. The guts and internals were all standard TH400, but with a goofy bellhousing on the front to bolt up to the AMC engines... Might be worth a shot to call a few trans shops/trans parts places to see if anyone has one laying around...

I wanna say it was:
  • 1960's - 1970's
  • TH400
  • AMC bolt pattern
  • no shaft (4X4 output)
  • hooked right into a 203
  • could use all HP parts, drag race parts
