Very loud road noise
I own a 2015 Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk. I want to describe a very unusual road noise and see if anyone has experienced this.
I bought my TrailHawk in the spring of 2017. It was used and from a certified dealer. I drove it as is. This is including the All-Terrain tires this vehicle came with.
Over the next few months, the road noise these tires generated got to be annoying. It was a constant drone noise. I then decided to upgrade to a more road worthy type of tire.
In the fall of 2017, I bought a new set of Goodyear touring tires. The quiet ride was immediate. For the next few months, I drove the TrailHawk mostly in town. Then, in the summer of 2018, I went out west. This is when I started to notice a different type of road noise.
This noise would be best described as a worn tire drone sound. One that has a warbling sound. Very erythematic in nature. The sound starts building around 45 Mph. By 65 Mph, it is extremely annoying to me. It's not a steady sound. It warbles.
This fall, 2019 this year, I decided to find the cause. I started by rotating tires. No matter how I rotated, the noise was still there. It seemed to be moving around. Maybe one of the touring tires was not quit right.
I then bought a 5th tire of the same kind. I started putting this tire on one wheel at a time. By the time I had rotated this new tire to all 4 corners, I still had the exact same sound. The same semi-loud and very bothersome warbling sound.
Recently, I decided it could be a wheel bearing. I replaced BOTH front wheel bearings in the TrailHawk. I went on a small trip with my wife just last week. The exact same sound is still there. It just won't go away.
I then let my wife drive. See if this sound is everywhere in the TrailHawk. In the passenger's seat, I can barely hear this noise. I got in the backseat. I could not hear it at all. Once back in the driver's seat, it is just driving me crazy.
I found if I turn my head sideways, this sound drops dramatically. If I lean towards the window, it all but disappears. It is sounding like it is some type of harmonic convergence zone. Like different sounds are harmonically meeting at the driver's seat.
This is my FIRST 4WD vehicle. Has anyone experienced this phenomena?? After removing the All Terrain tires and replacing with quiet road tires??? Are ALL 4WD vehicles like this??? If you make them extremely quiet, will you hear all kinds of other noises??? Any vehicle I ever owned, including my three Patriots, and very quiet with these same touring tires. Not one sound in the slightest.
I have spent $1400 so far on tires and parts. I wish I had the old All Terrain tires back. At least that noise was constant!! Is this something I just have to live with???
