Default Tranny problems. 2003 Mazda protege.

I've posted this on 2 forums with no avail. If it helps get more responses, once I fix this POS it will be sold to buy a cherokee so, with that said...

As stated I have a 2003 Mazda Protege. 2.0L, auto trans, 130,xxx miles.

I'm having a problem between 20MPH and 50MPH, whenever I hit a bump (On what seems like the passenger side, or both tires) the tranny does a "violent" downshift. It jerks forward, goes into a lower gear for a split second, and then goes back into the gear it was in. I'm pretty sure the tranny is also slipping a bit. My MPG's are not what they should be.

Seems like the VSS is bad, but the only CEL code I have is A faulty 02 sensor reading.

Nobody has anything? Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the idea? I can't afford to take it to a trans shop and have them look at it, they charge up the butt.

Any help would be great!

Transmissions are a total pain to diagnose and service, especially if it's a mechanical problem. The only advice I can offer is give everything electrical a good looking over. Look for things like loose or corroded wires, or places where a short could occur. Check fluid level. If you have the tools and specs, check all the sensors and switches to make sure they're working properly.

Best of luck to you.

flush the transmission and replace the fluid. if that doesn't work it is a neumatic failure and itll most likely be time for a new tranny

Not quite what I wanted to hear, I forgot to mention I did a flush & replaced the filter last weekend. Guess I'll be calling some transmission shops today after class and see what kind of quotes I can get for someone to look at it.

Thanks guys

This makes looking for a 5 speed XJ a little better. Never did like auto trannys...
