I have a '96 Grand-AM SE and when and if she turns over when I hit the accelerator a ticking comes from the motor like a tap that gets quicker the faster I go. Any ideas on what that is? I was thinking a rocker arm but I need some other opinions on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

sounds like a rocker or lifter to me, or needing a valve lash adjustment

 

Any idea on how much that would cost me to repair?

 

I'm also hearing that it could be a rod bearing. Other people say I have to junk the engine and drop another one in there. And I DEFINATELY do not have the cash for that. Any ideas on this? Price for bearings etc? i need all the help I can get.

 

Is the noise coming from the top of the engine or the bottom end? Top I would say rocker or valve lash adjustment out, bottom rod or main bearing, it could be low oil pressure.

 

Pretty sure it's the top end. I just have to look into it and see what exactly it is. I want to know how much it's going to dig into my money.

 

The GM 3.1 Liter (3100) V6 is KNOWN for valvetrain clatter. www.60degreev6.com is a good site for information on the entire GM 60* V6 line which includes the 2.8L (the predecessor to the 3.1L) 3.4L DOHC, 3400 V6, 3.6L, so on and so forth. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but you should check oil pressure, also check for intake and head gasket leaks as this motor is KNOWN for those too. All of this information is relevant UNLESS you have a 2.4L I4...haha.

 

Haha it is the 2.4L I4. Should I still not worry about it though? I don't think it's a huge problem.

 

 

The 2.4L is also known for valvetrain clatter. Do you remember the old 2.2L motors from the early to mid 90's that GM used? Those things sounded like the timing chain was just coasting along the sprocket...haha. If you start to hear a solid knock, that's when you need to worry.

 

Yeah it clicks faster the higher the RPMs are. And do you know if the parts are cheap. labor is no problem cuz I'll be doing it myself.

Now that I have the noise fixed i have another problem...
Now she won't stay started. She fires right up and won't stay started for more than like 10 seconds. I replaced the battery and alternator because those were bad and needed to be replaced. Any ideas?

 

Was the noise from the valvetrain? Your running issue, check fuel pressure at the rail when it dies. That could be your MAP sensor, throttle position sensor. Do you have a service engine light on?

 

No there wasn't a check engine light on. Now it won't even start. I cranks and makes like an electric sound EHHHHHHH sound lol. If you can kind of understand that. I looked at alot of things and I'm still stumped.
