MJ Truck Bed Camper... Bad Idea?
So I've been looking around for an old ford or dodge 4x4 to pop a slide-in camper in, since I know a F250 or a Ram could probably take the weight with little problem. But I recently found an awesome deal on a 5-speed 4x4 MJ, probably the in the nicest condition I've ever seen one in. I'd rather have the MJ anyway since I know most of the truck from working on the Cherokee, and I could just sort of swap parts from the Cherokee (like the wheels/tires I just bought 3 weeks ago) rather than having to buy them all over again. Plus I'd have a spare engine. The body on the Cherokee is beat to hell to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't pass road inspection, so I don't feel too bad about parting it.
But I'm unsure of what these things can handle for weight. I've seen a few blogs & pics of it being done with little effort but there's not that much follow-up on it. The camper I'm planning on buying is little, it would fit and not look like it would tip the truck. Probably about the smallest one you could find that still hangs over the cab. I'm not even sure if the MJ is a unibody like the XJ, or if I could replace the bed/rear end on it to accommodate the size and weight. I know the straight six with an AX-15 is capable of hauling it.
Any thoughts or logic good or bad are welcome. Thanks.

i haven't ever personally driven a pickup with one of those drop in camper units... but i have driven my MJ with 1300lbs of scrap weight down to the scrap yard (about a 20 min ride) and man was that sketchy.....
but as far as the facts about the MJ.... the cab forward is a unibody just like the XJ's, the frame under the bed is exactly that.... a boxed frame.
how about some pics of this MJ.... always love seeing them around
