been searching on CL for toys and found a cj5 and a guy that might trade it to me for my altima. I've been reasearching for a while and i thnk i like them. doe any of you have experience with them or the 4.2 carbed engine?
its an 82, 4.2L straight 6, 4 speed on 31s
cherokee=104" wheel base, I also have a cj2a which is 80"WB and the cj5 is at 84" so I figgure It will be like my 2a except a tad taller, a lot more power, and a tighter turning radius. these assumptions correct?
no worries, cherokee still has a home in my stable due to awesome wheelbase and warmth

The 4.2 will not be near as snappy as the 304 that was also available. However, those came with a 4 speed that had a grandma gear. Very handy for wheeling especially since the tcase had only a 2.0:1 ratio. They were capable and good wheelers and unless you are crawling rocks, the wheel base is no disadvantage.

I love my cj5! Mine is a 75 but it is good out on the rocks stock. I would go for it i love the 5s
the one im looking at is a 4 speed. good to know about the granny gear. 2.0 is pretty bad in the TC, np231s are 2.72 to 1 right? Which case you think an 82 would have? a dana 20?
i've always loved the old jeeps, and although 82 isn't that old, not much changed. My girlfriend doesn't like the cherokee as much cause your not "outside". Never though she would enjoy getting spider webs and mud in her face but i guess she does. I just figgure ill get more use out of a 5 then a lowered old altima.
I would rather have the v8 but i don't really need it.

Thanks for the specs, however the t-14 was a very weak tranny. It was also behind the 225 V6 and was fortunate to get out of the parking lot without breaking. I broke mine twice before replacing it with a t-15 which was very tough.

Yeah your well come and i hear you! Over thanksgiving I am changing t-14 out. The throwout bearing is messed up so i have to take the trany out soo mine as well change it when i have it out.

Do yourself a favor. Cut down the front adaptor if you have one or move the transfer case back and put in a t-15. Same bolt pattern up front and at least twice the strength of that under designed gear box. Another nice thing is that the synchros are serrated and just won't pop out of gear. I had the transfer case bolts back out of mine and never knew it because the typical popping out of second gear never happened .
excelent info. so an 82 should have a dana 300 instead of a 20 which scores me 2.62 low instead of 2
.
it has the 258 straight 6 so it could have a t18 or a t176. which one, both, or neither have a granny gear, and which one is stronger?
and i don't know much about the amc 20, but from my limited research im a tad dissapointed it wont have the 44, unless the 44's back then didn't have 30 splines or something.
great info, i really hope i get it now. thanks guys
