xj front pinion seal replacement
there are 2 pinion seals listed for the xj d30. buy both to be sure you have the correct one, then just return the other later.
start by removing the front drive shaft. there are four 8mm bolts holding the straps on. be careful not to strip these. make a note which side and direction each strap goes for install.
then mark the pinion nut and yoke. also note/mark the drive shaft in relation to the yoke for install.

then remove the pinion nut. i used an 1 1/4 socket.
IMGP5521.jpg?t=1270353644
then remove the nut. i used an electric impact.
IMGP5522.jpg?t=1270353776
then remove the washer, making sure to note which side is out.
IMGP5523.jpg?t=1270353812
then pull off the yoke. she's pretty dirty.
IMGP5524.jpg?t=1270353882
then using a seal puller, or screwdriver, remove the old seal.

IMGP5529.jpg?t=1270354023
at this point, you can pull and inspect the outer bearing. we passed.
IMGP5530.jpg?t=1270354086
clean it all up with some brake cleaner.
IMGP5532.jpg?t=1270354157
coat the new seal lip with some oil.
IMGP5531.jpg?t=1270354215
using a plastic mallet, tap the new seal in place. be sure to tap evenly around the lip. a bfh will just damage the lip, and a rubber mallet will be too soft. you can use wood and a bfh if that's all you have.
IMGP5536.jpg?t=1270354276
reinstall the yoke in the same relation to removal.
IMGP5537.jpg?t=1270354410
install washer in same relation as removal.
IMGP5539.jpg?t=1270354482
then the nut. you should use a new nut, but then marking for torque would be unnecessary, now wouldn't it?
IMGP5540.jpg?t=1270354585
torque to about 200 lb/ft. i didn't like the feel the torque wrench had against the ring/pinion, so i just used the impact. but xj doesn't use a crush sleeve, so just get it real tight. try to get as close to 200 as you can.
IMGP5541.jpg?t=1270354684
there you go. now bolt up the drive shaft and enjoy.

i also did a fluid change while we were at it.
