Default WOW this has got me puzzled???

2001 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 with Quadra-Trac.

So today while driving on the freeway and going around a slight curve at 70, I noticed that my steering suddenly got very stiff, like the power steering went out on me.

I slowed down anticipating to pull over but when i did the power steering came back?

Pulled over check the pump and fluid, everything was working fine. Then when pulling out again at low RPM's (900) the power steering would go out, then come back on at higher RPM's.

Checked for codes and I got a P0740 code (TCC).

Now everyone would probably say its the Power Steering Pump gone out, however I just replaced it 3-4weeks ago with a new pump. I know new parts can fail also, but with the vehicle being full time all wheel drive and the P0740 code I'm thinking that its more of a trans problem manifesting in the front drive?

Maybe I'm reading too much into the P0740 code coming up at the same time, and its probably just a bad PS Pump, but I wanted to see what others thought about it. Anyone run into this problem before?

Thanks

Forget about the P0740 code. My 2000 WJ pops the same code every 200 miles after a reset and has for 4 years. After much research and part replacement, I've determined it's the torque converter itself and I ain't pulling it apart to save 200 rpm at highway speed. I'm still getting 24 mpg at highway speed and 14-16 around town with a tired 4.0. Getting it inspected is a real trick. You have to clear the code, drive it constantly checking the monitors until they clear, then get it to the inspection station before that F-ing CEL pops back on! Otherwise, you have to complete another drive cycle.

Question; Did you use the old pressure relief valve when you replaced the pump? The reason I asked that is when I replaced the pump on my wife's 97 Dodge Caravan, the replacement pump didn't have one and the instructions were to use the old one. Yours could be hanging up. All it is is the fitting on the pump that the pressure hose screws into. At least it was on the Caravan.

Oh good call... Just one problem I did that Hydra fan to electric fan conversion on this and had to change out the pump, thats why its new. I thought the pumps were same as in flow, but had to change out the hoses too. Apparently I have to do some research on flow control.

One question though, 3-4 weeks ago when I changed out the pump it worked flawlessly, why would flow control become weak now? Break-in or clogging due to dirty/old PS fluid?

Good call, I think it is a flow control problem. Now I just need to find the right pressure line.

The Hydro-fan system uses hydraulic fluid and the standard system uses power steering fluid. IDK if they are compatible or if the steering box needed to be flushed or not.
