Default Won't shift into 2wd. first post... please help

hello everyone and thanks for all help in advance. well i just bought a 98 grand cherokee its v8 4 wheel drive. both the front cv boots were torn when i bought it an the joints were bad so i changed them. then we got a bunch of snow where i live so it was in 4wd for about a week now it won't shift back into 2wd. i tried everything i can think of like backing up, trying to shift in every gear at various speeds, etc... no luck so finally i got under it and tryed adjusting the linkage. no luck. then i checked the fluid.it was low and dark so just drained it and filled it with walmart brand that said was good to use in dexron II or III. is it the fluid? or something else? please any ideas?

You don't have 2wd unless some one put a 231/242 transfer case in. You have fulltime 4wd.

A few V8 models came with the Selec-Trac t-case. I wish mine had it. That's the next change on the list for it.

Have you tried to shift while in neutral?
Try to shift it manually from underneath while someone helps from inside with e-brake on and wheels blocked. JMO

ok ive been looking around some and reading what everyone here posted since i dont have the 231/242 t case, but do have the 249 j does that mean mine is awd? my 4x4 shift bezel has a 2wd mark on it. does the 249 j go into 2wd? or has someone swapped out the t cases? and if thats the case should i be hearing clunking while parking in tight spots eventhough i changed the cv's

Default 249 t-case

I believe the 249 is 4wd high and 4wd low only.
Correct me if i'm wrong... my 95 grand cherokee had a 249 and it was 4-H and 4-L only.

I had a 242 in my 89 XJ and it had 2wd, 4wd part and full time and 4wd L but I did a t-case swap and swapped to a 231 and got rid of my 4wd part time

I know this is old but what about the selectrac system. I cannot get mine into 2wd but I can put the transfer case into neutral and that part works. Just no 2wd. Plus as I move it up to 2wd it goes through part time and it seems to stick in part time. I catch hell getting it back into full time. It goes into 4lo nicely and all but the 2wd in causing me headaches.
