Wont go into park all the way
1 i have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 V8 (5.2) and NP 249 (all wheel drive) so this problem just happend today, first it would not go into park, but you could move the shifter there and it will just sit there, i tried it on my driveway and after i put it into park, the shifter would not click in place, i had to shove it all the way forward for the shifter to click. but if i am on any kind of hill, the jeep will roll like it is in nutral and make a horrible clicking sound. it sounds like it will not engage in park all the way and i can not shift it in park maunally from under the car. any ideas?

I hate to tell you this, Dude, But I think your linkage is out of adjustment, possibly inside the tranny, or your parking pawl is broken, also inside.
But, who am I to tell a senior member something as simple as this?

There is a TSB from Chrysler for high effort needed to shift. It states there is a PRNDL bezel update. There was also a problem with the 95 ZJ shifter, it required replacing the shifter assembly with a revised unit.

ok but it has been perfectly fine up till now, and every other gear is in the same spot, the only problem is park. the rest feels normal. so i am just gonna drop the pan and see if i can see the problem

The adjustment is in the cable, if it's time for a tranny service, go ahead and pull the pan, but there isn't much you could do in there for your issue.

hey i am bringing this back cause i am still having this problem. the transmission also started to down shift irregular. by this i mean it shifts back to first way to easy, even at 50mph it still tries to downshift into first. the park position pretty much does not exist, i just think it is time to ditch this thing, cause my wife needs a car with better gas mileage anyway.

You can try adjusting the Trans Gearshift cable to fix that Park issue, and adjusting the Throttle Valve cable to see if it helps with the shifting issue.
Gearshift Adjustment Procedure:
(1) Shift transmission into Park.
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Release cable adjuster clamp (at transmission
end of cable) to unlock cable.
(4) Unsnap cable from cable mounting bracket on
transmission.
(5) Slide cable eyelet off transmission shift lever.
(6) Verify transmission shift lever is in Park
detent by moving lever fully rearward. Last rearward
detent is Park position.
(7) Verify positive engagement of transmission
park lock by attempting to rotate propeller shaft.
Shaft will not rotate when park lock is engaged.
(8) Slide cable eyelt onto transmission shift lever.
(9) Snap shift cable adjuster into mounting
bracket on transmission.
(10) Lock shift cable by pressing cable adjuster
clamp down until it snaps into place.
(11) Lower vehicle and check engine starting.
Engine should start only in Park and Neutral.
Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment Procedure:
(1) Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
(2) Remove air cleaner if necessary.
(3) Disconnect cable end from attachment stud.
Carefully slide cable off stud. Do not pry or pull
cable off.
(4) Verify that transmission throttle lever is in
fully closed position. Then be sure lever on throttle
body is at curb idle position.
(5) Insert a small screwdriver under edge of
retaining clip and remove retaining clip.
(6) Center cable end on attachment stud to within
1 mm (0.039 in.).
(7) Install retaining clip onto cable housing.
(8) Check cable adjustment. Verify transmission
throttle lever and lever on throttle body move simultaneously.
This might not help but it's worth a try, and doesn't cost anything.

thanks a bunch, i will try this and see if it solves the problem. oh and the shift thing, i thought i should also mention that if feels like it is slipping a bunch and will not shift into 2nd from first under normal acceleration conditions until 3000-3500 RPM's. also if you floor it, it will run all the way through first, bounce off the red line for like 5 seconds, then skip all the way to 3rd. so i think the tranny is just going out.
