Hi ,
I'm just another newbie with a suspension question for my recently acquired 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo .
When I got it it rode hard, rocked and rolled, and swayed a lot. Here's what I've done to try to solve the problem so far.
New Monroe gas shocks all the way around. New upper and lower rear control arm and ball joint. New tires. The sway bar bushings look good.
It's only about 30% better. It's still rides hard sways a lot on dips and bumps and is sometimes difficult to control.
I've read a lot on this forum that suggests putting a solid sway bar on the back to solve the problem. However, I've noticed that when I turn right the front right corner seems to dip more than normal. I've also read on here that based on my symptoms it could very well be springs. I've measured the distance from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the wheel well. The front is at 18 in the back is at 18 and 1/2 in. I'm told that's normal. The vehicle seems to be sitting level. When I try and push down on the fenders because of the gas shocks that I put on it really doesn't move down that far or bounce.
So I guess my question is should I put on new springs or a new solid sway bar on the back? I've bought four Moog springs but have yet to install them. I want to make sure that them. If not I'm going to take them back and save a little money . Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike

I have to ask what your expectations are and what are you comparing it to. This is an SUV. The WJ does pretty well as an SUV. The wife bought an Explorer, and it does corner well, but rides like a tank. Uncomfortable in my opinion. There are some trade offs in this
I used to own a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I understand the SUV ride. However, this one does not corner well. It sways all too far to one side of the other. And if driving down the highway if there's a dip in the road it rocks and is sometimes a bit difficult to control.
This is for normal street driving. I don't offer road at all. The firm ride doesn't bother me the rocking and rolling and unstable driving is what concerns me.

Yep. I just had it in the shop to have the bearings done on the front differential had the fluids changed from the back differential the transfer case in the transmission. I had to replace a tie rod so they aligned it. That was just last week.
However, since I posted the original question I decided to start putting the new springs on. I got the two front ones on before evening came. Took it out for a drive and it was a vast improvement. Doing the backs tomorrow. I'll report back at the final result.
Looks like it was the springs after all. Had nothing to do with the sway sway bars or tracker bar.
