Exclamation wife's 07 stuck in "D" need help asap!

Hey guys my wifes jeep broke down on us the other day, i pulled in to get air in the tires, got back in and the jeep thinks its still in drive. It wont start becauss it thinks its in drive and the check engine light is on. I have tried everything. I cleaned the esm, disconnected battery. I can shift it into the other gears just fine but on the prnd dash light the D stays circled. Im thinking new esm, not sure what do you guys think?

Ive tried scanning the codes but i got nothing for some reason, maybe i accidentally erased the code because i had just bought the scanner and was learning how to use it. Thanks guys.

Sounds like you need a new neutral switch. They are not cheap.

I took my father's apart and cleaned it and it's been fine. But it sounds like yours may be broken.

Yes. Unless your wiring is bad. Your best bet is a new neutral safety switch. There is a bypass for it if you want to be a hundred % before replacing.

But you have to search the net for it. Pretty easy to find.

This might be obvious but I'll say it anyway.
If you bypass it it'll start in any gear so make sure it's in park or neutral.
Hold your foot on the brake to be sure!

Yes. That is one job of the nss. And what kingfisher said. If you bypass it be warned it will start in any gear.

so from what i have read, the nss is part of the TRS ( transmission range sensor) and it is located inside of the transmission.

Should be on the outside. And it's not terrible to remove.

When you install the new one it has to be lined up properly. It will come with an installation tool but sometimes no instructions.

yeah it should be but i guess with these trannies they put them inside of the tranny on top of valve body, then they integrated the nss with the trs. thats from what ive read online. if im wrong thatd be awesome, but i cant find anything else online.
