Default Wheel Size Question??

My 97 Grand Cherokee says the wheel size is 16x7.

A guy on Craigslist has a set of wheels from a 99 which are 16x5.

What is the difference and could I use these on my 97?

Doubt they are 16x5 but I think (key word is think) the bolt pattern on Grands changed in 99 to 5x5.

The 99 and newer GCs are a 5 on 5 bolt pattern. To run them you will need an adapter.

Should be either 16x7 or 17x7.5.

Ok, called back and said they were 16x7 with a 5x5 bolt pattern. My Grand has 5 lugs? So what is the difference? Sorry for my ignorance here. Is it the pattern of the lug holes won't match up?

Yeah, the 93-98 grands have a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern.

Ya don't know why they made diff patterns but they have to match up perfectly for the rim to fit.

Its like this; your 5 wheel studs are set up like a star, when you measure distance it is from one stud across the hub to one of the two studs farthest from it. You measure from center to center. This gives you the 5 studs x 5" spacing or 5x4.5" spacing.

The 16x7 dimension you're talking about is a 16" rim top to bottom, that is 7" wide.
