Took another look at it today... All I can say is ugh...
170k miles. full time 4 wheel (high or low) Runs Great. Cold AC. Trans shifts good. Interior is very nice. Looks good till you get close to it... Ft end has $1700 stuck into it 20k ago... New fuel pump... Brakes are good... 7 prong wired...
Needs:
Tires (237/75r15)$500
One rim (10 spoke gold)$50
Rear end is VERY noisy, and is VERY hot after a 2 mile trip. Very loud whine... (dont know gear radio, has disks) $400?
Exhaust system (cat back) $150
Shocks $100
Ft CV shafts ($70 each)$140
Bad Battery $100
Hitch is rusted almost off
Hatch pinch weld is rusted off (rattles)
Rockers rusted through in a few half dollar size pieces
Ticking from manifold area? Needs manifold gaskets mabey?
He says he'll think about it when I said $500... He said that he wants around a grand... He bought it for 10k in 2001, it ate $4000 in maintiance stuff between now and then, and hes not real motiviated to sell...
Little help? Would I be biting off more then I can chew if I ONLY wanted a winter beater? Also, any jeep people in wisconsin, within my driving distance of Eau Claire, that would be willing to take a look at it with me again, and talk me out of it or into it? I'd pick you up, and buy lunch...
Just looking for some help...

Walk away. It's not your problem that the diffs needed rebuilt.
Hey, owning a vehicle is expensive. Basic maintenance can eat up a lot of money. Diffs, t-cases, transmissions eat alot of money.
You're talking 170k miles and needs alot of work and different parts... Looks to me you are going to have at least 12-1500 in it, before tax, title, license, and insurance.
It's probably going to need a trac-bar, ball-joints, shocks, brakes, alot of body work, (if it's that rusty what about everything else) etc...

In it's defence, I saw moog on the ball joint and outer tie rod end boots... They were put in 20k ago ($1700 recite for everything)
The body isnt that bad either...
I can do shocks, they're easy... I do suspension work daily, whats another jeep to add to my plate?
Are the differentials known to be weak or should I suspect abuse?
~Nate
*EDIT*Is it common for them to suck you in like this??? jeeze...*EDIT*

Not that it will influence your decision at all, but I paid $6,000 for my rare '97 ZJ and then had to spend another $1,200 to the shop to have the D44 rear-end rebuilt. If I had to do it over, I'd do it again. I love my ZJ. My wife's '04 WJ is nice, but I wouldn't trade her.
