My problem child (97 Grand Cherokee rescue) needs a new muffler (not broken or leaking just too loud to suit me) I've had this vehicle for 1,000 miles and 4 months now. The guy I bought this from had put some kind of glass pack muffler on that sounds horrible. I think he got it from some junkyard as he is super cheap guy. I've heard cement mixers that were quieter than this. I was wondering just what brand is best replacement. I don't want to spend a zillion dollars on some high priced muffler but want to have something more in the reasonable priced area that is not super quiet but quiet enough to hear myself think. My 94 Laredo 4.0 had a good muffler that was not loud but I got that at Midas and don't want to spend mega bucks again, thank you. I have a good mechanic/welder guy who can put it on for a song...... Any suggestions? What do you have on your 97?

Yeah, you can get a cheap turbo muffler from thrush or walker that will be much quieter than that glass pack. Like 30 bucks.

 

I have a 50 series flowmaster on mine right now and its quiet drone inside but a decent outside drone this is on a 90 xj btw

 

NAPA Soundmaster OEM replacement. $35 and adaquate sound control without being super quiet. Nice power drone at low speed that disappears at speed. WITH a tailpipe. JMHO. I had one on my '97 ZJ 4.0.

I deliver newspapers and yes, I was cheap. I only put the muffler on without a tail pipe. One nut on my paper route complained about the noise to the police several times and they came up to me on my route and talked to me. They found it okay and couldn't understand where the problem was. I told them I'd put a tail pipe on it anyhow. This guy STILL complained and one night while the cops were talking to me, came out of his house screaming at them to give me a ticket! One cop told him to go back inside and they'd handle it. I told the cops they should cite him for "thief of services" for calling them out for no reason and they agreed. End of problem.

Come to find out, this guy was fired from the newspaper and had it in for us newsboys anyhow. Total whack job. This whole incident started my good repore with the police. My friend was reported by this guy while driving a new totally stock 5.0 Explorer.

 

I decided to get a Dynamax super turbo. My 97 is at the mechanic's right now having it put on. I was able to look under when he had on his lift and saw that the present muffler was the cheapo Thrust orange colored glass pack straight muffler. No wonder it was loud!!!
