Hey guys. I got a 93 GC limited with the 4.0 42re auto. At least I think it has the 42re. That is a 4 speed tranny, yet my jeep seems to shift into 5 gears. Now the tranny has some problems like it has to rev up high before it will shift into 2nd or 3rd (Around 3-3.5krpm). But once it is in 3rd soon after it will shift to 4th and then seemingly to 5th. You can hear the engine change pitch and the rpms drop. Now I did some experimenting with the OD on/off button and noticed that it seems to rev up then down when I turn it on and vice versa. Could that be the "Extra" gear I am noticing when driving normally with the OD on? Just that extra revving before the OD gear engages?
Sorry if this may seem confusing but I tried to describe it the best I could.

Oh and I am going to try and get a video of me going through all the gears just to try and clear this up a little.

 

That extra gear is actually the torque converter locking up.
