Default "Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........CLUNK"

I have a 1996 GC Limited 5.2. The other day while driving home on the highway a horrible noise came from what i think is the transfer case area. I was driving at about 120 kph and all of a sudden this loud noise comes blasting out, "veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.. ......clunk" it sounded like a gear was spinning and not catching and then "clunk" back to normal this happened twice while driving home. I lost no power my rpm's stayed steady but on my "control centre" it said i was in 4 low. My Jeep is awd and i have never drove with it in 4 low. at the speed i was going i dont think it could have been in 4 low. Just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them and what it could be. I have driven my jeep a few times since this and it has not happened again but want to fix it with winter coming i dont need to be stuck up north with a broken down jeep lol. I am almost positive its in the transfer case or the electronics connected to the case. I have the np249 TC. any help would be great.

94 views and no ideas? come on guys... I have not driven the jeep too much, just around town it runs great no noise no clunk but im scared to take it out on the highway. im just worried that something is not right. any advise or ideas is helpfull thanks guys

It sounds like it's time for a new transfer case, now would be the time for the NP231J swap so you have part time 4wd instead of full time.

Only problem tho isnt the 231 inferior to a 242 ? 4 high will give you that jerking fealing when you turn. I say get a 242 but thats just me.

I think your problem is probably the chain is loose and needs to be tightend or replaced. Or it could have just been a fluke, try shifting into neutral and 4low and back a few times, and when you go back to 4WD Fulltime give it a good shove and hit the end so it will stay locked in place..

My mom's 242 does this sometimes on really rare occasions if you dont smack it into 2WD after using 4WD.

thanks guys. I did run it through 4H-N-4L a few times also sprayed some liquid wrench all around. I have a 1995 GC that I picked up for parts I know it has a newer transfer case in it (receipt was in the glove box) It only has 2400km on it according to the repair record, the cases look the same but the ID tag on my 1995 is not there anymore. I think Im gonna take it out an have it on the bench for when I need it lol. I like the idea of swapping out the TC so I can run in 2wd, might have to take a trip to the scrappers.

Is the 95 a 4.0 or a 5.2? The 4.0 will have the part time t-case.

The 95 is a 5.2, I bought it for parts but its in better shape then my 96 lol.

I thought only the V8s had the full time t-case.
