Default truck dies sometimes

1996 laredo, 165,000 miles 4.0L automatic.

i was having some starter problems the other week, i banged on the starter and viola, it started right up. i got a replacement for it, just havent gotten around to it because of the extreme cold lately. now im noticing some stuttering and staling mostly when it (truck and weather) is cold. i get driving and it stutters then when i come to a stop it will lope then die. i notice it does it when i have a 1/4 tank or lower. it started to die on me when i was getting onto the freeway. i was in one of those big banked u turns to get onto the freeway. it died when i was at about 35mph, i put it in 2nd and layed on the throttle, and it started and drove me home. im thinking about changing the fuel filter, if its easy. not sure if i should look at injectors? hopefully not fuel pump, heard those are a pain. plugs cap and rotor and wires are all newer. battery tested good. thanks in advance!!

Try a couple of bottles of dry gas and some injector cleaner. You may also have some trash in the tank.

Case in point; my uncle had a coronary when he found my cousin (4 years old) poring sand into his station wagon's gas tank! Luckily, he didn't start it before he had the tank removed and cleaned!

i just moved from cali to colorado. on that trip i picked up 2 bottles of lucas fuel injector/tank cleaner, ran through about 1200 miles no problem. now that were here, the problems start. i recent cleaned the..... cant remember the letters. its right by the throttle body, takes a star like bit to take off, IAP i think. anyways, i cleaned that before the trip but never took off the throttle body and cleaned that. possibly an idea??

lil update:

while removing my distributor to change out the crankshaft sensor i noticed my cap and rotor had a lil corrosion. someone on youtube suggested cleaning them with a screwdriver, scrapping off the corrosion. i went with a little sandpaper and a light sand to just knock off the rust color crap. i decided to put it back together before changing the sensor. started fine and runs fine. no little shutters or stalling. hopefully this helps others, ive seen question after question about this same problem. a phillips screwdriver and 2 screws gets you access to your cap and rotor, worth a check before you buy tons of parts.

One other thing. Make sure to put some anti-seize on those two screws. They are steel into aluminum and are prone to seizing. My friend wound up replacing his distributor after snapping them both off.
