Default Transmission Shift lever

I have a '94 Grand Cherokee 5.2 with full time 4WD. Automatic
Can anyone tell me how to remove the shift lever? My book says "pull shift lever straight up and remove it", well that's not working!
Thanks for any help.

The chrome ring at the bottom of the **** twists then slips down. Once the ring is down the **** slides up and off.

Ooops, my bad. I thought you meant a later GC. However, the book is correct, give it a real hard yank and it should come off.

The inside of my '94 ZJ 5.2L has been fully disassembled several times. I never removed (or needed to remove) the shift lever.

I need to replace the gear indicator bezel but must remove shift lever first. Mine is a T handle with the lock button on left side. Wasn't sure if just the handle or the whole lever came out.

The XJ has the same tranny I believe, AW4. The handle looks different but installs and removes the same.
