transmission question. with this work?
I have a 97 zj 4.0 4x4 with the 42re transmission.
It of course is not working anymore.... My funds-low disease is pretty bad right now so im stuck with fixing this crap myself...
I have someone with a 42RE out of a 93 4.0 4x4 he's willing to sell me, but will it work in a 97? from what I've read so far, the 97 has a different type of transmission control system.
the 93-95 has a TCM module separate in the car and the 96-97 has it built into the computer of the car. Am I right on this and would this matter at all??
Also I can get a 42RE out of a 97 4.0 but with 2x4 not 4x4.... any way this might be able to work?
I can get either of them for about $200 and I'll pickup a new torque converter since i'm in there. I just need to know if either of these will actually work for me.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Not putting you down, cause I have a 98 GC, but makes me wish sometimes I'd stuck with pre-electronics 4X4's. Sorry I'm no help!

I think the output shaft spline count is different between the 93 and 97 42RE transmissions, but I'm not certain about that.
