TRANSMISSION not shifting from 2nd to 3rd
Need help my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 straight 6 awd. It doesn't want to shift from 2nd to 3rd and just keeps the RPM'S up high. I just changed fluid and filter and shifted good then left it sit for a few day and went to drive it today and back to the same thing. Sometimes if I let off the gas it will shift other times it wont. I read a few things on here and one person said about the dip stick not seating right. Mine is loose not sure if that would really do anything or not.

Transmissions are not an easy mountain to climb, so unless you are very mechanically inclined, it sounds like you may be better off taking it to a tranny shop for repairs.
Many things could have gone wrong. Jeeps dont like it if you use the wrong case fluids. I dont know what fluid your Jeep takes, but i'm sure someone will chime in with that information. Also, it is important that you put exactly the right amount of fluid in the tranny, or that could cause problems all by itself.
What do you mean the "Dipstick is loose"? The Dipstick runs down a long steel tube from the top of your engine to the bottom of your tranny pan. It is possible that a vacuum leak, not sealed, could cause issues, but i doubt it. If its any amount of work to fix the "Seat" of the dipstick tube, just tightly wrap a rag or paper towel around the top of the stick and use that to block the air flow...
Good luck

Old fart with a wrench
It takes ATF+4 and check the level in NEUTRAL only. Read the stick. If that doesn't do it, you most likely have a solenoid problem. Shifts 1&2 are governor pressure controlled. Shifts to 3&4 are controlled by the TCM and solenoids.
The dipstick has nothing to do with it not shifting.

I just got it fixed today. It was the throttle position sensor. After a lot of searching the internet I just figured I would start trying the cheapest parts first and got lucky a trip to Autozone and $30 later problem solved. Thanks for the replies.

Did any of you with this issue have any codes? My 2023 Grand Cherokee is randomly getting stuck in what I believe is second gear with extremely high rpms and Jeep/Dodge won't do anything about. There aren't any codes and since it is random, they cannot reproduce the issue.
