Default Transmission Interchangability

I'm appoligize if any of my questions sound dumb or repeated on this forum. I'm just new to the Jeep I'm a Chevy man myself but what can you when a friend has trouble other than help them out. What transmissions will interchange With a 93 Grand Cherokee Lorado with the 5.2L V8 and how much trouble goes along with the swap? My buddies A518 is shot. Or how much trouble is it to rebuild and how dependable are they? I've built almost every type of rear wheel drive gm transmission so I'm not afraid of the work just trying to get an idea about what to expect.

they are very dependable, and quite inexpensive to rebuild if you can do it. Normally the first thing that goes is the TC then it send junk through the rest plugging it up and it burns up. Anyway I am mostly positive that you can get a tranny out of any jeep 5.2 or Dodge pickup, dokata. I have not had to do any tranny changes for so long but, I do remember that sometimes you need to only change the tail shaft on some.

If you have the ability to rebuild it, I would go that route, then you know what you have and done right will outlast the jeep.

This one the pump bushing welded itself to the torque converter and destroyed the pump housing. He got another pump and torque converter from a junkyard put all that in it, and now the transmission only has the forward range, no reverse. I've read a little about the rebuild through the ASTG overhaul manual I found online. It doesn't appear to be too difficult to do. I'm just curious about what kind's of upgrade's and thing's to do to make it stronger and more reliable. I called Dacco transmissions out of Mobile Alabama and they want $227.53+shipping for a complete rebuild kit and remaned touque converter. That's probably the route we'll take, because these transmissions are hard to find cheap.

that sounds like a good way to go. There is upgrades to clutch packs and such but I think for a vehicle like these the ones in them are fine, A shift kit is always something to think about as they do tend to get rid of slipage which translates to heat. Also finding the spot to drill a hole in the valve body so that oil circulates in park is also a nice added feature. Warms the tranny better in the cold and you can also check oil in park. Now about those electric silanoids and stuff in there, I have read about changeing them but know nothing about them. They do have history of making trouble. I am not even sure how much eltronics are on the 93, Ihave one too, It was close to the beginning of going that way.

Good luck and thats about as much help as I can offer. Maybe some local shops will feel like being chatty and give you more info.
