Default Transmission Help PLEASE

Hi all I just picked up my first JEEP the other day. Its an 93 ZJ with a 4.0, 42RE trans and 249 t-case. My question is this when i put the truck into drive it stays in 2nd gear and doesnt shift up or down, but if i put it into 1st and manually shift it it goes through all gears. This is where i get real confused when im driving it though i have to upshift to N then down shift to first to get it to go in all gears if i dont i only get 2nd and 3rd any help would be great. I have alreaddy found a donor trans but i would like to try everything i can before replacing it. Oh yeah i have already flushed and new filter and no change. Thanks for any help

The 42re is a source of alot of frustration in the ZJ's with a 4.0L. Google can help here as theres a ton of threads on the net.

This i found for you real quick, maybe it'll help. It does mention the 3rd gear default and how to test and read codes.
