It should be, as long as it's from a ZJ.

The Grands never shared a trans with the rest of the Jeep line.. with the exception of the very early 93's with an AW4 or AX15.

The rest were 42re's behind the 4.0L and necessitated a longer input.

so a 95 4.o with a 249 will be ok with a 242 out of a 97 4.0

As long as they are both from a Grand they are a direct swap.

Both the 95 and 97 had a 42re behind the 4.0L, so both require the same input gear length.

Yeah, ZJ 242's can be tough to find locally at times.

If for some reason you miss this you can use an XJ 242.. but you'll need to strip down both cases to swap the input gears.

Six nuts hold it to the transmission, two drive shafts, a vent hose, a couple of electrical connectors, and the linkage. The hardest part is the top nuts that hold the TC to the tranny.

NO XJ run the AW4 trans and the ZJ run either a 42RE or 42RH
