transfer case change
Hi all,
I recently bought a 1998 gc limited with a 5.9 engine ad quadra trac. I really like the engine for pulling my trailer but am wonderng how hard it would be to change transfer cases to something that wold give me 2wh.
I worked on big rigs and such for many years so the doing it is not a problem, however I have 0 jeep experience. Just wanting to know if any have done it and how practical the Idea is. Also what would be the best x-fer to use.
Thanks

Thanks for the link Brian,
I've been reading some related threads and am curious if my transmision and transfer case are the same as in the link. I thought I read somewhere that they were different on the 5.9 models.
Any info would be much appreciated.

Try a search on this site for 249 to 242 transfer case swap or try a 249 to 231, which ever t'case you want to use. Here is a thread that has some great info to start with. This site is not for the faint of heart. It is an excellent site for info.

You can use the 242, or a 231. Or, if you have a lot of money, or just happen apon one a 241(dld). The 231, 242, or 241 is a direct bolt in with the exception of the input gear. You may also have a different out put shaft in the rear, but the front shaft will stay the same ether way.
I have a 95 limited with the 5.2 V8, and Im running a 241 DLD. It was a direct bolt it, and I didn't even have to change the input gear. I did however have to use the dodge slip yoke, and a conversion joint on the drive shaft. If your towing with it, the 241 may be your best option. Much stronger then the other options. Look at my avatar pic, thats my first 231. It didn't last long!
