I was cutting wood today and had jeep in low 4+4, when I got out of timber I shifted it back into 2 wheel drive and I lost reverse??? Any clue on this? It seems to act like it's in gear but but when I gas it, it's like in in neutral! I am at a lost, I drove it back home(40 miles) and had no issues if drive. Stopped several times and tried reverse and nothing! Please any info would be great help, I am a do it yr self type a man but this boggles me!

 

I just bought a 2000 as well with the same problem and after some transmission disassembling I found out that it was just a broken snap ring. You can repair it without pulling the trans. You should also not drive it. I kept driving mine and did a little more damage

 

is your jeep a V8 or the 4.0? if its the 4.0 the trans you have is know for breaking the snap ring in the OD section which unbolts from the trans and can be done with out pulling the trans but you need a press to get the one spring out and in so if I would you I would drop the pan first cause if the snap ring is broken there will be peices of it in the pan

 

Good advise so far. Also put the shifter in low and see how it feels.
If it slips than you have a band problem. The reverse band comes on in manual low so its a good test.
Otherwise, most likely the snap ring broke

 

It is a 4l inline 6, I have all other gears and they work fine except reverse. I can put it in low lock 4 wheel drive and not fit it gas on a flat surface and it will go backwards slow until I try and turn or a obstacle obstructs it.. Is there a utube link or a diagram anyone can send to me on this tranny? I am a maintanance tech and work on Cnc machines so I do have the use of my shop as well as work to do the work.
