Default T-Case compatibilty

I have a 1996 grand cherokee limited edition. The t-case has gone on me. The current t-case in there is a 249 J. I have a lead on another tranny, the 247 j. Just wondering is anyone know if these two are interchangeable? the 249 only gives me three settings - 4hi, 4lo, and neutral. The 247 has 4hi, 2hi, 4lo, and neutral.

Has anyone ever swapped these two trannys? Thx for the help

Just an FYI - "tranny" or "transmission" and "transfer case" are two different animals...

Generally, if two transfer cases can be found attached to the same transmission, they're likely compatible. The two things you really need to watch out for are the mounting stud pattern (generally, Jeep uses a 6-stud circular pattern, derived from the Dana 300 'case) and the input gear spline count (probably a 23-spline as in most later Jeep apps - but check.) The "stick-out" for the input gear should be the same - there was some variance in the AW4 applications under the XJ and MJ, but you don't have the AW4. Your 1996 will have either the 42RE (with 6-242) or 46RE (with V8-318.)

Of course, there may be issues with the shifter linkage and output specs - but the shifter linkage can be fabricated or adapted, and the output specs can usually be corrected by swapping the slip yoke (rear) or getting a conversion joint (front.) The front yoke may also be swapped, if you find one that accepts the joint you want it to and that fits the output shaft (but it is unlikely that you will have to - since I don't think the ZJ/WJ changed the Cardan joints used in the shafts for the entire run.)

That's the best I can offer at the moment - I haven't gotten a contact with NP/NVG yet...

EDIT - I forgot that case OAL can be an issue - if it's within an inch, you're probably fine. If the case is longer, you'll need a shorter rear shaft - if it's shorter, you'll need a longer rear shaft.

If the shaft is too long, you can "stuff" the rear axle and kill the output shaft bearings.
If the shaft is too short, you can "droop" the rear axle and drop the slip yoke right out of the 'case!
